What is the difference between DDS and DMD?

When deciding on dental care for you and your loved ones, you want an experienced dentist, but what if you’re not sure about the letters that come after their name? Some dentists have DDS after their name, and some have DMD. It can be confusing to distinguish between the two.

So, is there a difference between DDS and DMD? No, there isn’t!

Understanding DDS and DMD: What You Need to Know

Both a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) are qualified to practice general dentistry.

They are equivalent degrees that require the same curriculum and graduation requirements, as well as the same licensing exams.

The difference lies in where the dentist attended dental school; some schools award a DDS degree, while others award a DMD degree.

Historically, the DDS degree began in the United States at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, and Harvard University was the first school to adopt the DMD degree because of its Latin translation.
