How do I know if I grind my teeth at night?

At first, you may not notice any changes, but eventually you’ll experience one or more of the telltale signs of bruxism (teeth grinding), including:

  • Sore jaws or jaw joints
  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Head, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Bulky musculature in front of the ears

Remember, you’re unlikely to experience every symptom immediately. If you notice any oral health changes, such as jaw pain, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with our TMJ dentist in Fishers.

How Bruxism and TMJ Are Related

Bruxism refers to the habit of grinding and clenching your teeth during sleep. TMJ refers to the joints that connect your lower jaw and allow for purposeful movement, which are not functioning correctly.

Untreated bruxism can lead to TMJ or aggravate the symptoms, which include:

  • Pain (similar to bruxism)
  • Clicking noise in the jaw joints
  • Jaw locking

Fortunately, your Fishers dentist can help diagnose and treat these issues using a variety of methods, such as BOTOX®, a custom nightguard, occlusal adjustments, or orthodontic treatment.

The dentist will discuss the options with you and help you make an informed decision about your treatment.
